Metolachlor mainly inhibits protein synthesis in germinating seeds, and secondarily inhibits choline incorporation into phospholipids, interfering with the formation of lecithin. This chemical is mainly absorbed by the young shoots, with the main absorption of monocotyledonous weeds occurring in the coleoptile, while dicotyledonous plants absorb it through both the young shoots and young roots, transmitting upwards to inhibit the growth of young shoots and roots. Sensitive weeds are poisoned and die either before emergence after germination or immediately after emergence.
