What is Propionyl brassinolide?

Propionyl brassinolide is a new compound synthesized by modifying brassinolide, and is a naturally occurring triterpenoid compound with 27 carbon atoms, 13 double bonds, and one carboxyl group.  It involves the acylation of 2,3-hydroxyl groups and the oxidation of 22,23-hydroxyl groups in the molecular structure of brassinolide.

What are the differences between propionyl brassinolide and regular brassinolide?

Propionyl brassinolide not only retains the inherent characteristics of brassinolide but also possesses a unique property. This distinctive feature is mainly manifested in its significantly prolonged duration of effectiveness. Regular brassinolide, when sprayed in suitable environments, can fully exert its effects within 3 to 5 days, making its duration of effectiveness relatively short. In contrast, propionyl brassinolide, after being sprayed onto crops, needs to undergo a reduction process of its previously oxidized structure before it begins to function. It typically takes five days for it to start working, and its duration of effectiveness can reach 15 to 20 days, representing a marked extension in duration compared to regular brassinolide.
