Flumetsulam is a sulfonamide-based herbicide that is absorbed by weeds through their leaves, sheaths, stems, or roots. It accumulates at the growing points of the weeds, inhibiting the acetyl lactate synthase enzyme. This inhibition prevents the synthesis of branched-chain amino acids (such as valine, leucine, and isoleucine), which in turn affects protein synthesis. Ultimately, this disrupts the cell division of the weeds, causing them to cease growth, yellow, and eventually die. Fluazolidine is used to control broad-leaved and some grasses in field legumes, soybeans and corn.
